On January 1st, Uber was offering premium fares to for deliveries east of I-95 in Miami, FL. They guaranteed a minimum payment of $20/hour for all deliveries between 11am and 8pm. This was the perfect chance to try again...
I turned the app on as soon as I left home. I drove about twenty five minutes and well past I-95. I was ecstatic when I saw my first delivery request. I was about two minutes from the location. I was to drive to Krispy Kreme in North Miami Beach and pick up a dozen glazed donuts. I parked right outside Krispy Kreme. I was very tempted to get a dozen for myself but resisted. I got to the front counter where the cashier asked me for an order number. I had no clue again, where to find this. She said it was ok, it was the only order at the time. I got the package which contained the box with the delicious donuts and got into my car. I swiped the "start delivery" button and went on my second try at this.
I was to deliver to a house in Hallandale, which was a little far but I was excited. I drove for about 20 minutes and arrived at the location. The kind customer was waiting for me outside the house, which was very nice. I did not even have to get out of the car. She picked up the box from my window and even tipped me FIVE WHOLE DOLLARS!
Hurray!!!
After this very successful first/second delivery, I headed to Aventura, FL. I figured that with all the restaurants around, something would definitely come up. Five minutes later, the bell went off. I was to make a pickup at a Pita place. Unfortunately, the app does not anticipate any information to the driver such as the customer delivery address, distance, etc... so it's a wait and see game. Uber you must change this! I guess maybe they don't want drivers refusing deliveries based on the locations. Uber deliveries can send you to some not so pretty locations. This is where I get scared and where you might decide to draw the line. As a woman, it is a tough decision but better be safe than sorry, right?
The next delivery was about 6 miles away from the Pita restaurant. The customer gave no tip as he didn't even open the front door and just shouted his instructions across the front door. I was to leave the food right at the foot of his door. So I did and then off I went onto my next delivery.
Wait, I had no other deliveries lined up yet. And this is when it gets tricky. I spent a bunch of gas, mileage, and time driving back to the restaurant. This could be easily made up for by letting customers tip on the app.
I drove back to the same area, where I got my next few deliveries, not all at once. I had to deliver, drive back, then deliver and drive back once more.
So... bottom line: I made $84 my first week, Total time online 11 hours. I got about $12 cash in tips (a lot of it was loose coins).
Was it worth it? Hey, I need the flexibility. It worked out to be about minimum wage after gas. I will continue to drive for now and hopefully I can tell you next time.
